Uber Mandates PIN Verification in Jalisco This Summer

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Uber has launched a temporary, mandatory safety initiative across six major Mexican cities to protect passengers during a projected spike in tourism and local events. Starting June 1, 2026, all rides requested in Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City, Monterrey, Cancún, and Los Cabos will require a four-digit PIN verification code before a trip can officially begin.

The security measure is scheduled to remain in effect for approximately two months to coincide with the peak season for regional sporting and tourist activities. While the PIN feature has been an optional tool within the app since 2020, this seasonal update makes the verification process automatic for every ride in the designated areas.

The temporary rollout follows a recent nationwide update that allows users to create a permanent, personalized PIN through their security settings, aiming to make the verification habit as seamless as remembering a mobile phone passcode.

Crowded events and busy transit hubs often create logistical confusion that unauthorized individuals can exploit to deceive waiting passengers. By requiring a mandatory verification code, the platform aims to ensure that riders only board the vehicle specifically assigned to them. Once the verification is complete, trips continue to be backed by standard platform safety features, including real-time GPS tracking, round-the-clock customer support, and insurance coverage.

The verification process requires three straightforward steps completed inside the vehicle. After boarding, the passenger locates the four-digit PIN displayed on their trip information screen and verbally shares it with the driver. The driver must then manually enter this code into their own version of the app. The trip will only register as verified and allow the driver to start driving once the correct code is submitted, which the rider can confirm on their own screen.

Alongside the mandatory PIN codes, Uber is implementing a broader, three-pronged safety protocol in Jalisco and the other participating states to handle the high volume of seasonal traffic. This protocol includes enhanced digital features, such as an encrypted video and audio recording function to document trips.

Furthermore, the company is expanding its support capacity by leveraging global operations to provide multilingual assistance and increasing direct collaboration with local public safety institutions. Finally, in-app educational campaigns will deliver customized guides for international visitors to encourage respectful interactions and guide them through the platform’s localized safety tools.

Since entering the Mexican market in 2013, the ride-sharing platform has expanded its operations to more than 100 cities across all 32 states. The current seasonal security push represents an ongoing industry effort to use technology to reduce rideshare deception and improve passenger safety during high-traffic periods.
