GET TO KNOW THE BEETHOVEN SYMPHONY 7

The four chords at the beginning of the first movement get everyone’s attention. But the real thing to listen for is the beautiful oboe solo that introduces the first theme. The second movement of this symphony is one of my favourite pieces of music—bar none. The way the melody starts with the basses and then moves through the string section is brilliant. The third movement – did Beethoven actually mean “Presto” or was that added by an editor? I mean—come on!! The musicians are grateful for the slower sections that give us time to breathe, however, that “Presto” marking keeps recurring. The fourth movement begins with two dramatic chords followed by a measure of silence! The rest of this movement is a playful interaction of themes between the winds and the strings. As is typical of Beethoven, there are both rhythmic and melodic motifs that repeat in different keys and different sections of the orchestra. Sometimes Beethoven ends his masterpieces with multiple measures of chords that tell us all the the piece is ending. However, in this symphony he has three final chords that give us this information. Although it is a lengthy work, the time passes quickly for those of us on stage as we focus, create, enjoy and make music together.

IAMPV IS LOOKING FOR A HOME WE CAN CALL OUR OWN
Throughout the years since the Chamber Orchestra and Salty Paw began, when students began taking lessons, when we became a non-profit Civil Association, we have not had our own location. The American School and Estacion Gourmet were incredibly generous but they no longer have space for us. We have chairs, stands, sound equipment, instruments and music stored in various locations. Some lessons are given in private homes, some out-of-doors, and some online. We NEED a home: a room (preferably air conditioned) large enough for about 40 musicians to rehearse including large percussion instruments, keyboard(s) and upright bass – and a choir secure instrument storage, teaching space, accessible parking and on a bus line. We have a dream. We have dreamt before and look at (or listen to) the fantastic results! Contact us at iampvinfo(at)gmail.com
AND IS SEEKING DONATIONS OF…
- Instruments: bassoon, bass clarinet
- A truck or van to transport equipment
- A bodega or garage to store equipment
- A professional sound system with mics, cables
- A smart phone
- Cash to help us to continue to deliver vital education programs
If you can help, please email iampvinfo(at)gmail.com
