The Vallarta Azteca-CECYTEJ Folkloric Group, founded in 2003 by Professor Juan Antonio Salcedo Padilla, is set for its eighth international tour, the sixth in Europe. This month, the 35-member delegation, including dancers, mariachi musicians, and vocalists Herenka & Curiel, will visit Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey, performing at cultural festivals in each country.
Established in 2003 at the CECYTEJ Puerto Vallarta campus, the group quickly rose to prominence, winning state and national dance competitions. Professor Salcedo then dedicated himself to leading the group full-time. Beyond international tours (Canada, Cuba, Argentina, Europe, South America), the dance troupe organizes the Vallarta Azteca International Folkloric Dance Festival and offers dance classes for all ages at their private school in El Pitillal.
With over 180 members (62 in the main company and 120 in the dance school), Vallarta Azteca actively promotes Mexican culture. Many dancers have pursued professional careers in regional Mexican dance, forming their own groups.
Maestro Salcedo’s participation in the 51st World Congress of CIOFF, a UNESCO-affiliated organization, secured invitations to European festivals. Selection criteria for these festivals are rigorous, demanding high-quality performances with live music.
Fundraising efforts, including a recent gala at Teatro Vallarta, support the tour. The group is still fundraising to cover additional costs like travel within Mexico, new performance attire, and sightseeing trips. While sponsors covered their Mexico City-Greece flight, further support is needed for transportation from Puerto Vallarta to the capital, and other expenses.
Vallarta Azteca is a celebrated cultural ambassador for Puerto Vallarta. For two decades, the group has captivated audiences with vibrant costumes, lively music, and traditional dances.
