Vallarta Botanical Garden Director Wins 2024 Marsh Award

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Each year, Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) organizes the prestigious Marsh Awards for International Plant Conservation and Botanic Garden Education. Sponsored by The Marsh Charitable Trust, these awards honor outstanding contributions to plant conservation and education.

The Marsh Charitable Trust, established in 1981, celebrates dedicated individuals across various sectors who strive to make the world a better place. Among its many awards, two Marsh Awards provide professional recognition and a £1,000 prize. Nominees are recommended by their peers through the BGCI Membership network, with winners chosen by the BGCI International Advisory Council and the Marsh Charitable Trust.

This year, the 2024 Marsh Award for International Plant Conservation has been awarded to Jesús Reyes García from Puerto Vallarta!

Jesús Reyes García is the Director of Vallarta Botanical Garden (VBG), an esteemed environmental organization in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. For over 19 years, VBG has been committed to studying, preserving, and showcasing Mexican native plants for both locals and international visitors. Under Jesús’s leadership, VBG has become a top conservation leader in Mexico.

Jesús’s journey began with a self-taught approach to building the VBG infrastructure. He constructed the garden’s laboratory using simple resources and pioneered artisanal procedures for in vitro propagation. His dedication and innovative methods have strengthened both the laboratory and the garden’s conservatories, making VBG a model for the ex situ conservation of Mexican species. Moreover, his resilience has guided the garden through the challenges posed by three major hurricanes.

Always eager to share his knowledge, Jesús inspires new generations to care for our planet. His work has not only created a vital conservation space but has also established Vallarta Botanical Garden as one of the most recognized botanical gardens in Mexico and around the world.

Jesús Reyes García’s recognition with the 2024 Marsh Award for International Plant Conservation is a testament to his passion and dedication. His tireless efforts have not only enhanced the Vallarta Botanical Garden but have also significantly contributed to global plant conservation.

This award highlights the importance of preserving our natural heritage and serves as an inspiration for others to follow in his footsteps.
