Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – A child diagnosed with cancer impacts an entire family. Not only does a cancer diagnosis turn a child’s entire world upside down, but overwhelming medical expenses can add an enormous amount of financial stress on families with minimal income.
Aid to Families of Children With Cancer (AFCC) is an organization that supports families who have a child diagnosed with cancer in the Puerto Vallarta region. The organization receives no government funding so relies solely on donations from private donors, community organizations, and fundraisers.
The pandemic has made this past year especially difficult for these families but, thanks to all of you, the AFCC continues to make a difference. Here’s the latest news from the AFCC:
The children have been busy going to treatments in Guadalajara and getting ready to return to school. Carlos is traveling three times each month and is responding well to his treatment. He’s started on a new diet plan. We hope that the treatments and diet will help him get better soon as the trips between home and the hospital in Guadalajara are exhausting.
Regina also has a new diet from her doctor. The “whole-food plant-based diet” won’t be easy for her or her family, but she needs to build up her system and get better so that she will be ready to return to school.
But it hasn’t all been hospital and doctor’s visits and diets. Jindra and her husband from Canada rented a boat to take the kids out on Banderas Bay. The children loved their time on the water! They also took some of the older children out for lunch one day. Thank you, Jindra!
The children also got a pool day at Andale’s pool and took home a big bag filled with fruits and vegetables.
Another fun experience for them was to see tiny turtles and learn about them.
The children need to enjoy fun days like swimming and boat rides and even learning about turtles and being together with their friends. It all helps build their immune systems. Great to see them having some fun over the summer!
Despensas will be distributed this weekend, so as always, we need donations to help with the despensas, medicine, and trips to the hospital.
