Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – A child diagnosed with cancer impacts an entire family. Not only does a cancer diagnosis turn a child’s entire world upside down, but overwhelming medical expenses can add an enormous amount of financial stress on families with minimal income.
In addition to treatments, other costs such as food, lodging for a parent while the child is in hospital, and transportation to and from Guadalajara add to quickly mounting stacks of medical bills. Usually, there are other children to care for. While one parent is staying with the hospitalized child, the other parent struggles to care for the rest of the family.
Aid to Families of Children With Cancer (AFCC) is an organization that supports families who have a child diagnosed with cancer in the Puerto Vallarta region. The organization receives no government funding so relies solely on donations from private donors, community organizations, and fundraisers.
The pandemic has made this past year especially difficult for these families but, thanks to all of you, the AFCC continues to make a difference. Here’s the latest news from the AFCC:
June despensas were delivered to very grateful families. We are now supporting 25 families! They all send their thank you’s and want everyone contributing to these to know how much the despensas help their families eat healthy and quality food.
The families have also had school meetings this past week, so we hope that the schools will be open again soon. As the children go back to school, they will be needing all kinds of support. The children have to wear uniforms, and they will be needing backpacks and supplies. Aurora is meeting with the moms to determine what’s required, so we’ll be posting their needs soon.
Luis Alberto delivered more cards to Arte Viviente as they were almost sold out. And he also delivered a painting for sale. Be sure to stop by and pick up a packet of cards and maybe take his painting home with you!
We have seven children going back and forth to Guadalajara for treatments. The trips and treatments are very tiring for the children, so please keep them in mind this month.
