Vallarta Empowers Youth with Environmental & Animal Care Programs

Puerto Vallarta continues to build a brighter future by engaging its youth in programs that foster environmental awareness and compassion for animals. Two standout initiatives – focused on nature education and animal welfare – are making a positive impact across the city.

On Friday, May 30th, the Environmental Directorate will host the second edition of the “Chiqui Environmental Council” at the La Montaña Community Development Center. This special event, themed “The Magic of Pollinators,” aims to teach children about the critical role bees, butterflies, and other insects play in maintaining healthy ecosystems. With support from local civil associations, kids will take part in interactive workshops and fun educational activities designed to spark curiosity and care for the environment.

The program, backed by Mayor Luis Munguía and the Municipal Government, runs from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and is open to only 25 children. Participants are encouraged to bring snacks, wear comfortable clothing, and carry a water bottle.

According to Environmental Director Laura Ramírez Barragán, the initiative not only offers a safe and enriching experience for children during non-instructional school days, but also nurtures a lifelong connection to nature. It reflects the administration’s vision to raise environmentally conscious citizens from an early age.

Meanwhile, Puerto Vallarta’s youth are also stepping up to care for the city’s four-legged residents. Students from the University of Guadalajara’s Regional High School recently volunteered at the Puerto Vallarta Animal Health and Control Center. Their efforts included bathing and walking dogs, socializing with cats, cleaning spaces, and donating food.

Led by the Department of Animal Welfare under Roberto Ornelas, the program highlights the power of youth to make meaningful change. The city encourages more schools and individuals to get involved by submitting a pre-registration form, allowing for safe and organized participation.

These initiatives show how Puerto Vallarta’s young people, with the support of local government, are helping to create a kinder, greener future for all.
