Vallarta Ferry Launches New Maritime Route in Banderas Bay

Puerto Vallarta, México – After a soft launch on January 6, the vessel known as the “Playa del Carmen,” commonly referred to as the Vallarta Ferry, was officially inaugurated on Thursday, January 8, 2026. The new service adds a modern maritime transportation option for destinations around Banderas Bay, expanding mobility for both residents and visitors.

Designed with comfort and safety in mind, the ferry has a capacity of 400 passengers and features air conditioning, restrooms, and three 600-horsepower engines. A trained and certified crew operates the vessel, which is expected to serve up to 600,000 passengers each year. The project is part of a broader tourism initiative that encourages responsible travel and respect for the bay’s natural environment.

The maritime route connects various points along the coast: Puerto Mágico, Los Muertos Pier, and Yelapa. It also includes areas such as Marina Vallarta, Mismaloya, and Costa Careyes, giving passengers the chance to discover multiple beaches and communities as the ferry traverses Banderas Bay.

Each crossing lasts about an hour and a half, with service currently scheduled three times a week. The Vallarta Ferry operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, departing from the Marina Los Peines at 9:00 am. A brief stop is made at Los Muertos Pier around 9:30 am before continuing on to Yelapa. The return journey leaves at 4:00 pm, arriving back in Puerto Vallarta at approximately 6:00 pm, allowing travelers several hours to enjoy their destination.

Passengers are advised that schedules and routes may change due to weather conditions, and it is recommended to check forecasts and confirm details with organizers before traveling.

Regular round-trip fares are set at 990 pesos per adult and 500 pesos for children ages 4 to 11. To encourage early use of the service, a promotional January rate is being offered at 600 pesos for adults and 300 pesos for children.

The inauguration ceremony was led by Jalisco Secretary of Tourism Michelle Fridman, alongside ferry owner Miguel Tejeda. Tejeda also announced efforts to secure a public subsidy that would allow for a discounted local fare, estimated at about 50 pesos round trip, ensuring the service remains accessible to regional residents.

Looking ahead, a second phase of the project envisions a comprehensive maritime connectivity circuit operating daily. Planned stops include Los Peines Pier and breakwater, the Malecón Pier, Los Muertos Pier, Las Ánimas, Quimixto, Yelapa, Pizota, and the Corrales area at the tip of the bay. Once completed, this expanded network is expected to strengthen regional mobility and further diversify the tourism experience in Puerto Vallarta.
