Hola Amigas and Amigos!

Season is staring to wrap up for many snowbird members. Wishing you safe travels north and a fun summer and fall. See you at our 23/24 Season Kickoff Party in December!

VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORTIVE ONLOOKERS WANTED

Weeding with Wine (or water) on La Isla
Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 4:00 pm

Meet at the John Huston statue on the Isla at 4:00 pm for more weeding across the multiple beds. This will be another clean up push before the rains arrive… and with wine and water! Master Garden Designer, Sunny Rossi, will again be the Sangria Specialist. If yard work is not your thing, please come socialize, and refill the workers.

ONGOING GARDENING AND CIVIC SERVICE

Historic Area Gardens: Our paid gardeners will be busy keeping the Isla and our planters watered until the rains are constant. Once the ground is soaked we will fertilize, add dirt as needed, and replace missing plants.

Los Mangos Library: We are reviewing a proposed landscaping plan for the entry area next week with the new Library Board. Work should start in two weeks and we will have a call for volunteers to plant once the boxes are ready. After that, we will look at possibilities and cost for landscaping an outdoor reading area and improving the children’s playground.

Vallarta Food Bank: In the summer of 2021, the Vallarta Garden Club built planter beds inside the Food Bank compound and outside in planter boxes on the street where clients wait to be served. This project changed a very run down space to one that is inviting and affirming for clients and volunteers. The Club is continuing to support client dignity and site appeal with funding for a new shower area and a landscape refresh. Work should start this month. The Vallarta School for Girls project remains on hold due to some lease considerations.

ABOUT THAT BUS AND BASILIO BADILLO?

Just so everyone knows… the City built and owns the planters and in prior years made repairs and was a responsive partner. Our role has alway been to water the plantings, fertilize, trim as high we can reach and repaint the boxes.

“Bus Hits” like in this recent photo, boxes damaged in never ending road work, the “mysterious black water”, and overgrown trees in the power lines have combined to make Basilio look awful. Plus there are no City garbage cans!

New Approach: After fruitlessly begging the City to help with repairs, garbage, and tree trimming, we are going to see if key merchant conversations might spur action. There is an acute need for a long term plan for street beautification and traffic control. We may need to start over with new boxes and plantings that don’t go into the wires and are drought tolerant.

Most of us have visited other cities in Mexico that are clean, have walking streets and real civic pride. It’s possible!
