Puerto Vallarta is preparing for one of Mexico’s most meaningful religious traditions as the city honors Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. Known as a major center for Guadalupana devotion, La Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe welcomes thousands of residents and visitors for a 24-hour celebration filled with music, prayer, and cultural expression.
The festivities begin at midnight with the traditional serenade to the Virgin, a moment that signals the start of an extensive schedule of masses and pilgrimages. The first mass begins at 1:00 am, followed by a steady flow of pilgrims throughout the night. Early morning events include performances by La Dolce Vita, as well as pilgrimages from communities such as Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Santa Cruz. The second mass is scheduled for 4:00 am, leading into the Dawn Mass at 6:30 am, a key moment for many devotees.
As the morning continues, the Navy’s War Band arrives at 8:10 am, adding ceremonial stature to the celebration. Two major events anchor the late morning: the 9:00 am Solemn Eucharist and the Peregrinación de los Favorecidos (Grand Pilgrimage of the Favored) at 11:00 am, one of the most significant processions of the day.

Pilgrimages continue steadily through the afternoon, along with a 5:00 pm Mass. As evening approaches, devotion reaches its peak with the arrival of the Guadalupano Torchbearers at 7:30 pm. The celebration concludes with an 8:00 pm Solemn Eucharistic Concelebration led by Bishop Engelberto Polino Sánchez.
The day honors the Virgin’s miraculous appearance to Juan Diego in 1531 – a story treasured across the nation. Her sacred image, said to be imprinted on Juan Diego’s cloak, is housed at the Basilica of Guadalupe, now the world’s most visited Marian shrine.
Recognized as Intangible Heritage of the State of Jalisco, Puerto Vallarta’s Fiestas Guadalupanas showcase the city’s deep faith and strong community values. Along Juárez Street, vendors offer traditional snacks, desserts, and handcrafted keepsakes, inviting locals and tourists to experience the festive spirit that fills the historic center.
More than a religious observance, the Guadalupe Pilgrimage highlights Puerto Vallarta’s rich cultural identity and the welcoming warmth that defines the destination. For many, December 12 offers a powerful opportunity to connect with tradition, celebrate unity, and honor a devotion that continues to inspire generations.
