Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Instituto de Artes Musicales Puerto Vallarta has announced two upcoming performances by the Puerto Vallarta Symphony Orchestra, inviting community members to experience an evening of stories told entirely through music. Conducted by Maestro Aquiles Morales, the concerts, titled The Wreckers, blend drama, virtuosity, and cultural celebration.
Attendees will have two opportunities to watch the orchestra perform, beginning with an evening event on Saturday, June 27, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Biblioteca Los Mangos. A matinee performance will follow on Sunday, June 28, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Universidad Tecnológica de Bahía de Banderas.
The concert opens with the powerful Overture to The Wreckers by English composer Ethel Smyth, one of the most influential and compelling figures in 20th-century music.
The dramatic work draws inspiration from Smyth’s opera of the same name, set in isolated, deeply religious fishing community on the English coast. Its inhabitants secretly engage in the deliberate wrecking of ships; they extinguish lighthouses or light false beacons on the cliffs to lure vessels onto the rocks, then plunder the wreckage – acts they justify as a supposed “divine right” of survival.
From England, the musical journey moves to Venice with Antonio Vivaldi’s expressive and technically demanding Bassoon Concerto, featuring bassoonist Noé Rosas. The program then travels to Vienna with Ludwig van Beethoven’s elegant Romance No. 2 in F Major, performed by violinist Ekaterina Stolyarova.
The orchestra returns to Venice for Vivaldi’s charming Mandolin Concerto, showcasing the talents of Luis Alfonso García. Later in the program, Rosas returns to the stage for Astor Piazzolla’s Escualo, a work that captures the intensity and passion of nuevo tango.
The evening concludes with one of Mexico’s most beloved orchestral works, Huapango by José Pablo Moncayo. Composed in 1941 at the request of Carlos Chávez, this celebrated masterpiece seamlessly weaves together three traditional folk songs from Veracruz: El Siquisirí, El Balajú, and El Gavilancito. The composition utilizes festive rhythms, lyrical melodies, and intricate orchestration to evoke the traditional sounds of harps, jaranas, and trumpets, offering a brilliant celebration of Mexican heritage and joy.
Tickets for both concerts are available online through IAMPV’s ticketing platform. Beyond offering audiences an unforgettable musical experience, every ticket purchased helps support music education programs for children in Puerto Vallarta, making each performance an opportunity to invest in the community’s next generation of musicians.
