What A Drag Benefits Vallarta Womens Shelter

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – On Sunday, March 8, 2020, some of Puerto Vallarta’s finest men will get ‘all dolled up,’ donning make-up, wigs, dresses and high heels, and take the stage at Teatro Vallarta to compete in the 6th edition of ‘What A Drag,’ Puerto Vallarta’s annual drag competition for straight men.

When the creators of ‘What A Drag’ came up with the idea of asking their straight male friends (and in many cases their husbands) to dress up in drag and perform on stage as a fundraiser for the Banderas Bay Women Shelter, they had no idea they were creating what would become one of the most anticipated social events of the season in Puerto Vallarta.

And if you’ve ever attended, you know why. Every year, straight men trade in their sneakers for stilettos and get up on stage to make a stand against domestic violence, while entertaining the audience with their hilarious antics. Now in its sixth straight (no pun intended) year, the producers promise to deliver an even bigger show than ever before.

The show begins at 8:00 pm, with contestants including event sponsor and ReMax real estate broker Todd Bates (aka Hot Toddy); Steve Uselton (aka Marie Ann Twanet); Doug Rockne (aka Tiddly Winks); Steve Macatee (aka ???); Gus Hellthaler (aka Luna Azul); Rob Scherer (aka Mama Cita) and Mark Schellhammer (aka ???) competing.

Each contestant has a Fairy Drag Mother to help them with costuming, makeup and talent, and ‘Miss What a Drag’ is selected by the audience.

Watching these straight men bravely and brazenly vie for the ‘Miss What A Drag’ crown in a competition that includes talent – from hilarious skits to singing, dancing and lip-synching – to evening wear and racy Q & A rounds, is a laugh-out-loud experience you won’t soon forget.

Teatro Vallarta has generously donated the theater and its staff for this fabulous event. A VIP pre-party, live performances by some of our great Puerto Vallarta singers and musicians, and an after party at Mango’s Beach Club have been added to the evening of entertainment over the years. And let’s not forget the fabulous show director, Javier Martinez, and Mistress of Ceremonies, Hedda Lettuce, who add to the festivities.

To date, ‘What A Drag!’ has sold out every year, and has raised over 3.4 million pesos to support the Banderas Bay Women’s shelter, which offers women and children who are victims of domestic violence with an immediate, temporary and safe living environment.

Last year alone, What A Drag raised $1,000,000 pesos, thanks to the hundreds of Puerto Vallarta residents and visitors who showed up at Teatro Vallarta to watch the contestants “come out” in support of this worthy cause. This year, event organizers are looking to exceed the amount raised last year, and you can help them reach their goal by becoming a sponsor, purchasing tickets, or both!

Make plans now to attend the sixth annual ‘What A Drag’ musical variety show on Sunday, March 8 at Teatro Vallarta. You’ll enjoy an evening of music, dancing, hilarious theater and tons of fun – all for a good cause!

VIP Tickets, which include the VIP reception before the show, are available for a donation of $1200 pesos. General Admission Tickets cost $600 pesos, and Gallery Tickets are just $300 pesos.
