Work on Puerto Vallarta Airport’s New Terminal Progresses

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Eight months after the start of the construction of the new terminal building at the Puerto Vallarta International Airport, works have advanced by 30% and are expected to be completed by the end of 2024, according to Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico spokesperson Miguel Cravioto.

The construction of this new building, which will be the first in Latin America to meet the necessary standards to be certified as Net Zero, officially began on August 29, 2022 and was projected to be completed within two years. In this sense, Miguel Cravioto mentioned that the work is progressing according to the provisions of the builders in charge of the project.

The Mexico City-based firm LBR&A Arquitectos is in charge of this project. Although it is the first time they have designed an airport complex, this office is recognized for its contemporary design, advanced technological and flexibility of spaces, with a clear structural-spatial understanding that enhances the Mexican technique and the use of solid materials, such as is described on its official page. Among their main works is the Reforma Tower.

At the start of the work, architect Benjamín Romano, founder and director of LBR&A, expressed that for his firm the design of the airport terminal represented a great challenge, but above all an opportunity to innovate and implement unique solutions that respond to the environment and the energy needs of a project of this magnitude.

The project contemplates the integration of iconic elements such as the ratchet, which will maintain the stability of the terminal, as well as the use of geothermal batteries and solar panels to achieve a sustainable terminal, with significant water and energy savings, in addition to contributing to positioning Puerto Vallarta as a leading destination in sustainability.

The investment for the Puerto Vallarta 2020-2024 Plan is seven billion pesos and will mean an improvement in airport spaces, especially for security filters that will increase their capacity by 125%, as well as checked baggage inspection points, which will double.

Terminal 2 will have an area of more than 62,000 square meters, which represents a 150% growth in the capacity of the buildings, but the amount of the investment could exceed three billion pesos. In addition, access roads will be added and the number of parking spaces will be substantially increased.

Despite the works, Miguel Cravioto assured that passenger air traffic to the current air terminal has not been, and will not be, affected by the construction.
