AMLO Signs Decree to Protect Sacred Sites in Four States

Mexico City – On August 9, Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Mexico, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador signed a decree aimed at recognizing, protecting, and safeguarding the sacred places and pilgrimage routes of the Huichol, Cora, Tepehuano, and Mexicanero peoples in the regions of Jalisco, Nayarit, Durango, and San Luis Potosí.

The decree, as explained by the President, is designed to acknowledge and safeguard the sacred locations that hold immense cultural and spiritual significance. These sites include Isla del Rey in San Blas, Nayarit; Isla de los Alacranes in Chapala, Jalisco; Cerro Gordo San Bernardino de Milpilla in Durango; Wirikuta in Real de 14, San Luis Potosí; and Santa Catarina in Jalisco.

During a press conference, President López Obrador emphasized his commitment to protect the sacred sites, which he referred to as the heart of Mexico’s profound cultural heritage and the most intimate truth of the nation. This commitment was made in 2022, in consultation with traditional authorities of the indigenous communities.

The President has directed all government departments and officials to adhere to this decree and take strong measures against any form of aggression or encroachment upon these sacred lands. The protection of these sites is of paramount importance to preserving the rich indigenous heritage that is an integral part of Mexico’s identity.
