Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco – Driscoll’s, a global leader in the berry market, has unveiled a cutting-edge extension to its network of strawberry nurseries in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico. The inauguration marks a strategic move to meet the rising demands of local growers.
The new nursery, established with an investment of approximately 120 million Mexican pesos (US$7.1 million), is poised to become a key player in the region’s agricultural landscape. The company anticipates the investment could double by 2027, underscoring its commitment to long-term growth.
Beyond financial investments, the project is set to stimulate the local economy through job creation. Over the initial three years of operation, Driscoll’s expects to generate 500 employment opportunities, providing a significant boost to the community.
This expansion adds to Driscoll’s existing nurseries in Puebla, Tlaxcala, and Jalisco, where patent seed propagation activities occur in advanced tissue culture laboratories. These facilities play a crucial role in cultivating mother plants of strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
The Lagos de Moreno nursery incorporates advanced technology to enhance sustainability. With two irrigation containers, a drip irrigation system, and substrate, the facility prioritizes water savings and improved plant quality. Automation in irrigation ensures resource efficiency.
To address challenges related to pests and plant contamination, Driscoll’s employs ultraviolet ray treatment and automatic application technology. This approach not only guarantees product quality but also aligns with the company’s commitment to responsible water consumption.
The impact of Driscoll’s nurseries on employment in Mexico is substantial. Currently supporting more than 2,000 permanent jobs, these facilities also create between 3,000 and 3,500 temporary positions based on the demands of the harvest season.
