Microsoft Pledges .3 Billion to Boost AI and Cloud in Mexico

Mexico City – On September 24, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella visited Mexico City to announce a major investment of $1.3 billion aimed at enhancing cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the country. During his keynote speech at the AI Microsoft Tour, held at the Citibanamex Center, Nadella outlined the company’s plan to drive digital transformation in Mexico over the next three years.

This ambitious investment will focus on improving connectivity, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and promoting the adoption of AI to foster business growth. Microsoft also aims to provide training in AI-related skills to 5 million people, ensuring that individuals and organizations alike can leverage these technologies for progress.

Nadella emphasized the pivotal role of AI in transforming industries and highlighted Microsoft’s three foundational pillars for business technology – Copilot Agents, Agents Stack, and Agents Devices. These tools are already being implemented by major companies in Mexico, such as Grupo Bimbo, Tec de Monterrey, and Cemex, signaling the country’s growing significance in the global tech landscape.

As part of the global AI Tour, Nadella showcased how AI can revolutionize various sectors, noting Microsoft’s ambition to position Mexico as a key player in Latin America’s tech ecosystem. This includes the expansion of Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, and efforts to make Mexico the first Spanish-speaking cloud region in Latin America.

Microsoft also detailed plans to collaborate with government, industry, and academia to democratize access to artificial intelligence education. The company will develop a training platform tailored to job seekers and workers, equipping them with skills that match the demands of the evolving labor market.

In addition, Microsoft is tackling pressing social challenges through its AI for Good initiative. The company’s work in Mexico includes AI models to diagnose Retinopathy of Prematurity (RoP), a condition that causes blindness in premature babies, and efforts to expand internet access to over 1.45 million people by 2025, including those in remote areas. The company is also dedicated to sustainability, with goals to achieve a negative carbon footprint and zero waste by 2030.

Nadella closed the event by reaffirming Microsoft’s commitment to integrating AI into all its platforms, highlighting Copilot as a key tool for revolutionizing content creation and collaboration in business and education. This landmark investment marks a significant step in Mexico’s journey toward digital transformation, driven by cutting-edge technology and innovation.
