Puerto Vallarta Celebrates the Kukur Tihar Festival to Honor Dogs

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – On November 9, from 3 to 9 pm, Puerto Vallarta will hold its annual Kukur Tihar festival, a joyful event celebrating the special bond between humans and dogs. Inspired by a Nepalese tradition, this festival is dedicated to honoring dogs for their loyalty, companionship, and love. Taking place in the Luna Garden at the popular pet-friendly Hotel Puerto de Luna, this family-friendly event invites locals and their pets to enjoy an afternoon filled with heartfelt ceremonies and engaging activities.

The Kukur Tihar celebration will feature various activities, including blessing ceremonies for dogs, canine competitions, and an altar where guests can light candles to remember pets who have passed. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own candles for this tribute, adding a personal touch to the ceremony. Decorative garlands and ornaments will be available to honor pets during the day.

The festival will also spotlight live art, with local artists crafting a mural focused on animal welfare. Animal protection organizations will be present to share information on responsible pet care and promote dog adoption. For pet lovers, booths offering pet products and free dog treats will be set up, making it easy to pamper their furry companions.

“We want this day to be about honoring and appreciating our pets’ love,” said Martha Dau, host and festival coordinator.

For entry, all dogs must wear a collar, leash, and identification tag. Dogs displaying aggression or in heat will not be permitted. Admission is free, but organizers encourage attendees to bring dry dog food donations, which will support local animal organizations. Those who donate will be entered into a raffle for prizes sponsored by local businesses, with additional raffle tickets available for purchase.

This special event invites Puerto Vallarta’s residents to come together, celebrate, and express gratitude for their pets in a way that honors both tradition and community spirit.

More than 800 people and their four-legged friends are expected to attend this family-friendly event, come join the fun! Puerto de Luna is located at Av. Francisco Medina Ascencio, Zona Hotelera Norte. (Google map)
