Puerto Vallarta to Host Spectacular 2025 Madonnari Festival

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Get ready for a burst of color and creativity! From February 14th to 16th, Puerto Vallarta’s Plaza de Armas will transform into a open-air art gallery, hosting the 17th annual Madonnari Festival.

This exciting event promises to be a celebration of art and culture, strengthening the sister city bond between Puerto Vallarta and Santa Barbara, California. The festival is made possible through the dedicated efforts of a production committee and the support of the municipal government led by Mayor Luis Munguía.

For three days, the plaza’s pavement will become a canvas for stunning chalk masterpieces. Artists of all ages will reimagine the space, crafting captivating illusions and masterful perspectives inspired by art movements from across the globe.

This unique art form, known as Madonnari, has a rich history. Originating in 16th-century Italy, these street artists, initially commissioned for religious paintings, began recreating their work on the streets. The name “Madonnari” comes from the frequent depiction of Madonna images.

The tradition spread, reaching London by 1906 and Puerto Vallarta in 1987. Today, Madonnari Festivals are enjoyed worldwide, connecting historical artistry with contemporary expression.

Councilor Laurel Carrillo, president of the municipal commission of Culture and Cultural Rights, announced that artists can compete in various categories: children, juniors, youth, and adults.

A distinguished jury of Madonnari artists from Santa Barbara will judge the artwork, considering composition, color use, and depth. The first-place winner in the adult category will have an incredible opportunity to represent Puerto Vallarta at the Santa Barbara Madonnari Festival in 2025. Alternatively, the winner will receive a 10,000 peso prize if they do not have a valid visa.

Participants will be provided with all necessary materials. Winners across all categories will receive cash prizes. Registration for this free event is now open! Interested artists can register by emailing madonnaripv(at)outlook.com or calling 322-160-8480.

Don’t miss this chance to witness the magic of Madonnari art in beautiful Puerto Vallarta!
