Vallarta Launches Massive Anti-Dengue Operation

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – In a coordinated effort to protect public health, local and state authorities have launched a large-scale campaign to combat dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease that tends to surge during the rainy season.

The campaign, a joint initiative between state and municipal governments, commenced on Wednesday, June 4th, at the La Lija sports complex, just ahead of the anticipated rainy season when the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries the disease, is most prevalent.

The comprehensive operation will deploy over 100 firefighters, 10 fumigation vehicles, and numerous nebulizers to systematically patrol and treat the entire municipality.

Mayor Luis Munguía led the launch event, underscoring the urgency of the situation. He was joined by key health officials, including Dr. Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez, Jalisco’s Secretary of Health, and Dr. Héctor Hugo Bravo Hernández, General Director of the Jalisco Health Services OPD. Representatives from vital health institutions like IMSS and ISSSTE were also in attendance, signifying a unified approach to public health.

During his address, Mayor Munguía pledged substantial human and financial resources, along with necessary vehicles and equipment, to tackle this health challenge. “More than indicators, more than numbers, as a team we will save many lives,” he stated, acknowledging that Puerto Vallarta’s climate and geography make a swift and coordinated response crucial.

Dr. Bravo Hernández praised the cooperation between government officials and medical teams. Dr. Pérez Gómez highlighted the importance of cross-border coordination, since the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, can easily move between cities and states.

Officials emphasized that public participation is vital. In addition to citywide fumigation, they urged residents to help by removing stagnant water from their homes. Simple steps like washing, covering, and turning over containers, keeping water tanks sealed, and maintaining clean yards can prevent mosquito breeding.

“We want a Puerto Vallarta without dengue, a Jalisco without dengue, and achieving this will be possible if we work together,” said Dr. Pérez Gómez.

Authorities concluded the event by appealing to the public to cooperate with health brigades and actively participate in prevention efforts. The operation officially began with the immediate deployment of units and brigades to various neighborhoods across the municipality.
