Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Puerto Vallarta’s trees are more than beautiful – they’re essential. These natural giants clean the air, cool the streets, reduce noise, and even help fight climate change. Now, residents have a unique opportunity to protect these living treasures for future generations.

Puerto Vallarta is blessed with incredibly large and long-lived trees—true testaments to nature’s grandeur. It’s up to each of us to cherish and safeguard these living legacies. Let’s work together to protect this precious life!
The Environmental Sustainability Directorate, under the leadership of Luis Munguía, has opened a call for residents to nominate trees of heritage value for permanent legal protection. The initiative began June 28 and runs through July 31, inviting citizens to help preserve the city’s natural heritage.
Tahamara Esquivel, head of Urban Trees for the Environmental Sustainability Directorate, explained that the project is a collaborative effort. Local organizations – including the Organization for the Conservation of Trees, the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Lab of the Centro Universitario de la Costa, the Puerto Vallarta Ecological Group, and the Vallarta Society in Defense of Heritage Trees – came together to push this initiative forward.
Anyone can participate by nominating trees that meet at least one of these criteria:
- Old
- Historic
- Monumental in size
- Socially significant
To submit a nomination, email a photo of the tree and its exact location to sub.medioambiente.gobpv(at)gmail.com. Eligible trees must be in public-use areas, and there’s no limit to the number of nominations one person can make.
Puerto Vallarta’s majestic trees – some of which have stood for generations – deserve to be honored and preserved. By taking a few simple steps, residents can ensure that these pillars of nature continue to thrive and serve the community for decades to come.
