Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón Undergoing Major Renovation

Puerto Vallarta’s famous Malecón, a central attraction for both tourists and residents, is undergoing an extensive renovation project. With a significant investment of more than 18 million pesos from the Federal Maritime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT), this beloved seaside promenade is getting a much-needed upgrade to enhance its appeal and functionality.

The restoration work is currently underway on the southern end of the Malecón, causing the pedestrian bridge over the Cuale River to be temporarily closed. This closure affects the path that connects Malecón II to Olas Altas Beach, heading toward the Los Muertos pier. The local government has advised that both visitors and residents should plan for alternate routes during this period.

According to Edén Arturo Castillón Villaseñor, the Director of Public Works for the City Council, the project began with seawall repairs about two weeks ago. “We started with preliminary lighting and other smaller projects,” he explained. “Now, we are moving on to larger tasks, like demolishing old concrete slabs and repairing walls.”

The project’s scope is comprehensive. It will include installing new slabs and borders, as well as brand new benches with a fresh design. Existing benches, including the classic teak and white ones, will be carefully restored. The plan also calls for new lighting to be installed and all electrical wiring to be updated. The iconic Dolphin Fountain and all streetlights will also be restored to their former glory.

In addition to these structural improvements, the Malecón will receive new street furniture, such as extra trash cans and benches. The irrigation system for the plants and the cladding on retaining walls, steps, and ramps will also be renovated.

The construction company Karger SA de CV, which won the bid for the project, will work on the section stretching from 31 de Octubre Street to the Cuale River bridge. The first phase of the project, which is the largest, focuses on the area from the Cuale River bridge to the Dolphin Fountain. A second phase will address the section from the Dolphin Fountain to the Rosita Hotel. As sections of the Malecón are closed for construction, the city emphasizes that these closures are necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

This revitalization project is expected to be completed by December, with the goal of finishing before the height of the winter vacation period. The efforts promise to breathe new life into one of Puerto Vallarta’s most cherished landmarks, ensuring it remains a beautiful and welcoming space for everyone for years to come.
