Puerto Vallarta Advances Equality and Safety with Barrios de Paz

Puerto Vallarta is setting a statewide example in Jalisco by becoming the only municipality to fully participate in all three sub-prongs of the Barrios de Paz (Neighborhoods of Peace) program. This achievement is the result of coordinated efforts between the Luis Munguía administration, the Jalisco State Government, and the Municipal Women’s Institute, led by Sarahy Hernández.

The initiative addresses a pressing issue: according to INEGI, 75% of young Mexican women aged 15 to 19 have experienced some form of violence. In response, Puerto Vallarta is investing $915,000 pesos in three key lines of action:

• Educando para la Igualdad: This component promotes true equality between all genders through workshops and awareness campaigns.
• Nos Movemos Seguras: This initiative is designed to prevent sexual harassment and violence, specifically in public spaces and on public transportation.
• CREATHI: This is a reflection center for men over 18, which aims to change violent behaviors and promote healthy, non-violent masculinity.

Fabiola Loya Hernández, Secretary of Substantive Equality, highlighted that these efforts also include awareness campaigns and coordination with the state roundtable against gender violence, offering support to victims’ families and local groups. She acknowledged Sarahy Hernández, head of the Municipal Women’s Institute, who has been recognized for her dedication to fostering a violence-free city.

Mayor Luis Munguía praised the collaboration with Governor Pablo Lemus, stressing that working together across different levels of government is essential to seeing real results. “We are building a more just and safe Puerto Vallarta, where every woman and girl can live without fear,” he said.

By fully participating in the Barrios de Paz program, Puerto Vallarta is actively working to make equality a reality and ensure a safer future for all of its residents, while strengthening its role as a model municipality in Jalisco.
