Frida Kahlo’s La Casa Roja Museum Opens September 27 in Coyoacán

Mexico City – Just steps away from the iconic Casa Azul in Coyoacán, a new cultural space dedicated to Frida Kahlo is preparing to open its doors. The Museo Casa Kahlo, also known as La Casa Roja (the Red House), will welcome visitors beginning September 27, offering an intimate look at the artist beyond her public image.

Unlike the Blue House, which focuses on Kahlo’s partnership with Diego Rivera, the Red House will explore her personal world – her childhood, family ties, cultural heritage, and private struggles. The museum is located in a historic home built in 1904 by Frida’s father, Guillermo Kahlo. Years later, Frida purchased it for her sister Cristina, and it has remained in the family ever since.

Kahlo’s grandniece, Mara Romeo Kahlo, has preserved the property and its archives, previously opened only to researchers and select figures like actress Salma Hayek. Now, for the first time, the home will be a public museum.

Inside, visitors will discover Kahlo’s dolls, clothing, jewelry, personal letters, photographs, and even her first oil painting—the one she showed Rivera when proving her talent. Also featured is a recently uncovered mural believed to be the only one she ever painted. Exhibits will include works by Guillermo Kahlo, who was a photographer, and rotating showcases of Mexican, Latin American, and women artists.

The Red House aims to immerse guests in Kahlo’s emotional landscape. Each room is designed as a sensory experience where colors, sounds, and projections come together to evoke her life’s intensity. Rather than reconstructing her biography, the museum seeks to interpret her world—fragmented yet poetic, fragile yet strong.

“This is a dream long held by our family,” said Mara Romeo Kahlo. “Frida’s legacy belongs to the world, but it begins here – on this land, in these homes, and in the culture that shaped her.”

La Casa Roja stands at 54 Aguayo Street in Coyoacán, just a short walk from Casa Azul. Together, the two spaces will allow visitors to see Frida Kahlo not only as the global icon she became, but also as a daughter, sister, friend, and artist deeply rooted in Mexico.
