Nuevo Nayarit, México – The Vallarta Cup Race Series 2026 returns to Banderas Bay on January 10–11 and 17–18, marking the traditional start of the local racing season with two weekends of spirited competition on the water. Hosted by the Vallarta Yacht Club (VYC), the series features distance races for cruising, performance cruising, and multihull boats, drawing both local sailors and visiting crews.

This year’s Vallarta Cup carries special meaning for the sailing community. The 2026 series is dedicated to Mike Danielson, the original founder of the event, who passed away at the end of 2025. First launched in 2005, the Vallarta Cup has been held every year since, growing into a respected fixture on the Banderas Bay racing calendar and a beloved kickoff to the season.

Races take place just offshore, with courses ranging from 10 to 20 miles, selected based on wind conditions. The start and finish line will be set in front of the Marival Skybar, providing a clear vantage point for spectators along the coast. Each class may have its own start, or staggered starts may be used, with start times based on VYC handicaps. These times will be announced at roll call 30 minutes before the first start, with the opening class scheduled to begin at 12:35 pm.

Off the water, the Vallarta Cup is equally known for its welcoming social scene. Each race day wraps up back at the yacht club with results, food, drinks, and live music.

On Saturdays, sailors and spectators are invited to enjoy an afternoon of music and local flavor, including a special offer of three tacos and a beer for $300 MXN – an easy way to unwind and swap stories from the racecourse.

The fun continues on Sundays with a relaxed, island-style afternoon featuring the club’s popular “Cheeseburgers in Paradise,” accompanied by classic Jimmy Buffett tunes and an easygoing post-race atmosphere. These gatherings reflect the strong sense of community that has defined the series for two decades.

This blend of professional race management and community spirit is made possible through the support of key sponsors, including Paradise Village Marina and Marina Riviera Nayarit.

Whether you are a veteran racer looking to test a new sail configuration or a newcomer eager to experience the local sailing culture, the Vallarta Cup offers an ideal start to the year. By combining high-stakes distance racing with the warm hospitality of Banderas Bay, the series reinforces the region’s reputation as a world-class destination for nautical sports.
