Mexico Finalizes World Cup Security Strategy for 2026 Tournament

Guadalajara, Jalisco, México – As international excitement builds for the upcoming World Cup, Mexican authorities and FIFA representatives convened in Mexico City last week to finalize a robust security strategy for the tournament.

Federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirmed that the meeting focused on intelligence sharing and operational protocols designed to protect fans and athletes alike. This collaborative effort includes high-level coordination between the Security Cabinet and local officials from Mexico City, Jalisco, and Nuevo León, ensuring a unified approach across all World Cup host venues.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed unwavering optimism regarding the country’s readiness, noting that federal and state forces are fully prepared to maintain a safe environment. During her daily briefing, she emphasized that the goal is to provide a peaceful atmosphere where international visitors can focus entirely on the spirit of the game. This sentiment was echoed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who maintained full confidence in Mexico’s ability to co-host the prestigious event following a recent productive dialogue with the President.

The preparations come at a pivotal moment as the iconic Azteca Stadium nears the completion of a two-year renovation project. The historic venue is expected to reach a capacity of 87,000 spectators just in time for the opening match between Mexico and South Africa on June 11.

Before the global tournament begins, fans will have a chance to experience the updated facilities during a high-profile friendly against Portugal on March 28. This match serves as a soft reopening for the stadium, marking a significant milestone in the countdown to the summer festivities.

Beyond the main tournament matches, Mexico will also play a central role in determining the final lineup of competing nations. Guadalajara and Monterrey are set to host a critical inter-confederation playoff featuring teams from Jamaica, Iraq, DR Congo, Suriname, New Caledonia, and Bolivia.

By hosting these diverse international squads, Mexico continues to solidify its position as a premier destination for global athletics, promising a summer of high-stakes competition and celebration across its three host cities.
