Puerto Vallarta DIF Program Reunites Man with Family

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – After spending eighteen years without a permanent home, Gonzalo Urzúa has been reunited with his family thanks to the Comedores Dignos (“Dignified Meals”) program operated by the Puerto Vallarta DIF System, led by President Lucky Michel. The initiative provides hot meals and assistance to people experiencing homelessness and others facing vulnerable circumstances.

The program was created with the goal of offering dignified support to those in need. According to Lucky Michel, the effort has grown through community awareness and outreach, which led to Gonzalo being identified through social media and the process of reconnecting him with his relatives to begin.

Following his reunion with his brother, Gonzalo shared his appreciation for the support he received. He explained that having breakfast each morning gave him the energy to face the day and helped him feel better physically and emotionally. He also expressed gratitude for the kindness and attention shown by the DIF team throughout his time in the program.

Between January and March of this year, the Comedores Dignos program assisted 570 individuals, helping to meet essential food needs among the local homeless population. This continued outreach demonstrates the program’s commitment to ensuring access to nutritious meals and respectful care.

Services offered through the program extend beyond providing food. Each participant begins with an interview to better understand their situation and immediate needs. Through the Social Work department, individuals receive guidance with important procedures and documentation, as well as support in seeking employment opportunities. Hygiene kits, clothing, and shoes are also distributed to help improve daily living conditions.

These combined efforts aim to strengthen dignity, encourage social inclusion, and support individuals as they work toward rebuilding stable and healthier lives. Gonzalo’s reunion stands as a meaningful example of how compassionate programs and community support can help restore family connections and open new paths forward.
