Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In the heart of Old Town, the annual Fiestas Patronales at Parroquia de la Santa Cruz are once again bringing neighbors, families, and visitors together to celebrate faith, culture, and community. The festivities take place each evening through May 3 along the streets at the corner of Aguacate and Lázaro Cárdenas in Colonia Emiliano Zapata.
This long-standing celebration blends religious devotion with family-friendly entertainment. Visitors can enjoy lively parades, traditional food booths serving Mexican favorites, games of chance, children’s rides, raffles, and contests. Nightly cultural programs feature folkloric dance groups from across Mexico, along with live music from singers, bands, and DJs performing on a stage set up outside the church.
Founded as a parish in 1975, the church is among the oldest in Puerto Vallarta and holds a special place in the city’s history. During the festival, daily Masses are celebrated at 11:00 am and 7:30 pm, with Rosary services each evening at 7:00 pm. The ringing of the church bells at noon each day serves as a reminder of the spiritual significance at the heart of the celebration.
The novena began on April 24 and continues through May 3, culminating on the feast day of the Holy Cross. This day holds deep meaning for bricklayers, who honor their patron saint by decorating wooden crosses with flowers and colorful paper. These crosses are later placed at construction sites as symbols of protection and faith.
The final day of festivities begins at 9:00 am with the arrival of a ceremonial torch from Talpa de Allende. A procession follows, carrying flower-adorned crosses from the Emiliano Zapata Market to the church for a special blessing at 11:00 am. That evening, the parish community gathers again at 6:00 pm for a grand pilgrimage.
The celebration concludes with La Noche Mexicana, a festive evening organized by parish groups that includes a traditional verbena featuring food stands, games, and rides, along with music and dance performances. At 11:00 pm, a fireworks display featuring a towering castillo marks the official close of the festivities.
For many long-time residents, the Fiestas Patronales are more than an annual event – they are a cherished tradition that reflects the spirit of community in Puerto Vallarta. Streets fill with laughter, music, and friendly conversation, reminiscent of the days when neighbors gathered outdoors to celebrate together.
Residents and visitors alike are invited to experience this meaningful tradition and enjoy free, family-friendly entertainment while supporting one of Old Town Puerto Vallarta’s most treasured cultural celebrations.
