New High Performance Sports Center Coming to Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is preparing for a major boost to its athletic infrastructure, as Pablo Lemus announced that construction on a new High Performance Center is expected to begin this July within the Alfonso Díaz Santos Sports Unit in the Bobadilla neighborhood.

The project marks the first phase of a broader plan to transform the existing sports complex into a modern training hub. An initial investment of 80 million pesos has already been approved, with funding secured in the state’s 2026 budget. According to Lemus, final project plans are now being completed, clearing the way for construction to move forward in the coming months.

The initiative reflects Jalisco’s long-standing commitment to athletic excellence. The state has maintained a remarkable record, winning 24 consecutive national titles in the National Olympics and 20 in the Mexican Paralympics. Officials aim to build on that success by strengthening sports infrastructure across the region.

In Puerto Vallarta, the focus is on creating a high-quality training environment at sea level – an important advantage for athletes preparing for national and international competitions often held under similar conditions. The new center is designed to give local and visiting athletes access to facilities that meet the demands of high-performance training.

The project also aligns with broader urban improvements led by Mayor Luis Munguía. His administration is planning a linear park that will connect the Alfonso Díaz Santos Sports Unit with the Coapinole Lagoon, creating an integrated recreational corridor that links sports, green space, and community access in the city’s north side.

While the current phase includes an 80 million peso investment, the full renovation of the Alfonso Díaz Santos Sports Complex is expected to reach approximately 200 million pesos, as previously indicated by Munguía.

The planned upgrades extend beyond general training spaces to include high-level aquatic facilities. The project features a comprehensive overhaul of the Olympic swimming pool, which will receive structural reinforcements and a modernized hydraulic system. Improvements to changing rooms and common areas are also included to ensure that safety and hygiene standards meet the requirements of elite competition.

By providing these optimized training conditions, the state aims to support its athletes as they pursue a historic 25th consecutive national title. This investment not only honors the legacy of Jalisco’s champions but also ensures that the next generation of Puerto Vallarta’s talent has the resources necessary to succeed on the world stage.

Beyond expanding opportunities for local athletes, the enhancement of these public spaces will benefit residents and visitors alike.
