The cobblestone streets of Puerto Vallarta are preparing for a dramatic transformation this weekend as the city welcomes the 2026 Downhill Vallarta urban mountain bike race.
On May 1 and 2, forty of the world’s most elite cyclists will descend upon the downtown district, turning historic neighborhoods into a high-speed arena. This free event offers residents and visitors a front-row seat to a display of world-class athleticism and technical precision.
The weekend’s program is carefully designed to highlight both the speed and the artistic flair of the sport. Friday serves as a vital preparation phase, with official practice sessions allowing riders to familiarize themselves with the technical nuances of the urban course. This essential preparation sets the stage for Saturday’s main competition, which features a dynamic and fast-paced format.

The energy in El Centro will build steadily throughout Saturday afternoon. Participants are scheduled to arrive at 3:30 PM, followed immediately by a warm-up round at 4:00 PM. The stakes increase at 4:30 PM with the qualifying round, where riders must secure their spots for the final heat.
The competition reaches its peak at 5:45 PM with the downhill final, a sprint through the city’s iconic corridors that leads directly into the Free Ride Jam & Best Trick show at 6:15 PM. During this showcase, athletes will perform high-risk maneuvers and acrobatics on Aldama Street. The day will conclude with an awards ceremony at 7:30 PM to honor the top performers.
Crafting a course of this caliber required the vision of international specialists Ollie Wilkins, Christian Fairclough, and Liam Mason. These acclaimed designers have mapped out a route that navigates narrow alleys and steep staircases, ensuring the circuit meets the rigorous standards of global competition. Beyond the local excitement, the event places Puerto Vallarta on a global stage through extensive media partnerships with networks including ESPN, Fox, Disney+, and National Geographic.
To accommodate the safety of the athletes and the large expected crowds, local authorities have announced temporary road closures throughout the weekend. Emilio Carranza and Aldama streets will be closed toward the Malecón from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm, while cross streets Juárez and Morelos will close from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on both days.
City officials encourage the public to plan their travel in advance and utilize alternative routes to avoid delays. By taking these precautions, everyone can enjoy the adrenaline-filled atmosphere as the city’s heart becomes a hub of international sporting excellence.
