Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – One of the most significant infrastructure projects in the Puerto Vallarta–Bahía de Banderas metropolitan area is approaching completion, with the Amado Nervo Bridge now more than 80 percent finished and expected to open to traffic by the end of June or during the first week of July.
During a site inspection on June 4, Nayarit Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero joined officials from the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) to review progress on the project, which will create a direct connection between San Vicente and Ixtapa.
According to SICT resident engineer Rafael Acosta, the bridge’s main structure has been fully completed. Vehicles are not yet permitted to cross, but it is already possible to travel from Nayarit to Jalisco across the finished viaduct. Current work is focused on paving, curbs, and other final details required before the bridge can officially open.
The project has advanced well ahead of schedule. Acosta reported that construction is currently 26 percent ahead of the contracted timeline, which originally called for completion in December 2026. As a result, the bridge is expected to be delivered several months earlier than planned.
Work continues on the Jalisco side of the project, including embankments, drainage systems, roadway improvements, and the construction of a bicycle path that will form part of the overall transportation corridor.
With an investment of approximately 900 million pesos, the Amado Nervo Bridge ranks among the most important transportation projects currently underway between the states of Nayarit and Jalisco. Once operational, it will provide a new route across the Ameca River, strengthening connectivity between two of western Mexico’s fastest-growing communities.
Complementary improvements are also underway in Bahía de Banderas. The Government of Nayarit is expanding Avenida Federaciones, the principal access road to the bridge. The project includes the widening of more than four kilometers of roadway, increasing capacity from four lanes to six. Additional improvements include paving, lighting, signage, drainage rehabilitation, and a bicycle path that will connect directly to the bridge. An additional investment of 12.7 million pesos has been allocated for these upgrades.
One of the bridge’s most anticipated benefits is a reduction of up to 25 minutes in travel times between Bahía de Banderas and Puerto Vallarta. The improvement is expected to enhance daily mobility for a metropolitan population of more than half a million residents.
The new connection will benefit thousands of commuters, including workers, students, business owners, and visitors who regularly travel between the two municipalities. It will also provide a more efficient route for students attending the University of Guadalajara who live in Bahía de Banderas, as well as residents of Jalisco who work or study in Nayarit.
Once completed, the Amado Nervo Bridge is expected to ease traffic congestion on existing routes while strengthening economic, tourism, and social ties between Nayarit and Jalisco. The project represents a major step forward in regional integration and will provide a strategic new transportation link for years to come.
