Banderas Bay Whale Watching Operators Gear Up for 2024-2025 Season

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – On November 21 and 22, over 400 whale watching tour operators from Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas participated in refresher courses to prepare for the 2024-2025 humpback whale season. These sessions, hosted at Tec de Bahía de Banderas and the CECATI auditorium in Puerto Vallarta, aim to promote safe, sustainable, and rewarding whale-watching experiences.

The initiative, led by GRIMMA (Marine Mammal Research Group) in collaboration with SEMARNAT (Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources), ECOBAC (a non-profit focused on the Ecology and Conservation of Whales), and PROFEPA (a federal agency for environmental protection), featured expert presentations on vital topics such as climate change impacts, regulatory compliance, and responsible tourism practices. Participants included captains, guides, and boat owners who will apply for federal permits required to operate tours this season.

“These courses are crucial for maintaining the highest standards of environmental responsibility,” said GRIMMA representative Iyari Espinoza, a marine biologist and conservationist. “By educating operators, we can minimize disturbance to whales and protect their delicate ecosystem.”

Rafael Zermeño, head of Natural Resources and Wildlife for SEMARNAT Jalisco, emphasized the importance of training as mandated by NOM-131, the Mexican Official Standard governing whale watching activities. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the standard, which ensures the protection of whales and their natural habitats.

With over 200 permits and whale watching flags expected to be issued by December 8 – the official season start date – operators must meet strict safety and regulatory requirements. The courses highlighted the economic and ecological value of responsible whale watching, ensuring this treasured activity continues to thrive while safeguarding marine life.

Whale watching tours in the waters of Banderas Bay not only draw thousands of visitors to Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit, but also support conservation efforts, creating a win-win for tourism and environmental protection. As the season approaches, locals and visitors alike can look forward to unforgettable encounters with these majestic marine mammals.
