Bucerías Oyster Festival Returns April 19-20 with Free Food and Fun

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The seaside town of Bucerías is getting ready to celebrate one of its most cherished traditions – the Feria de Ostiones (Oyster Festival) – returning to El Punto Beach April 19-20, 2025. This popular event is a joyful tribute to the community’s oyster divers and the rich coastal culture of Riviera Nayarit.

Held from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm each day, the festival will offer visitors an unforgettable mix of food, music, and local traditions. More than 5,000 oysters will be given away for free, while seafood lovers can also enjoy delicious dishes like ceviche, fried fish, and other specialties from the region – also free of charge.

The celebration goes beyond food. Guests will be treated to live music, cultural performances, and traditional displays that highlight the spirit and history of Bucerías – whose name fittingly means “Place of the Divers.”

A favorite highlight of the event is the annual “Biggest Oyster” contest, where local divers compete to find the largest oyster of the season. This friendly competition marks the end of oyster harvesting season, a vital part of the area’s economy and way of life.

Local fishing cooperatives play a key role in the festival, donating part of their harvest as a gesture of gratitude to the thousands of visitors who spent their Semana Santa vacation in Vallarta-Nayarit. Their participation helps preserve practices passed down for generations, including the rare skill of free diving for oysters without equipment – a tradition recognized by the Nayarit Digital Inventory as part of the region’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Bucerías Oyster Festival first began in 2000 as a way to honor these divers and celebrate the close connection between the community and the ocean. Today, it continues to draw hundreds of visitors who come to enjoy its warm, welcoming atmosphere and authentic coastal flavors.

Admission is free, and everyone is invited to join this festive weekend by the sea – a true celebration of food, culture, and tradition in the heart of Riviera Nayarit.
