Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – New York comedian Keenan Steiner moved to Mexico in 2020 with the goal of combining his love for standup with his love for Spanish and Mexico. Well, he has stayed a while, with comedy shows in 2021 and 2022 in Puerto Vallarta and most recently at La Catrina Cantina, where he’s about to bring his one-man show and standup hour, XXL In Mexico, during Vallarta Pride 2022.
Keenan’s show, Gringo With Questions, ran in March and April of this year at La Catrina Cantina in Zona Romantica, a place he loves because it’s a haven for all kinds of artists and crowds – Mexican, foreign, LGBTQ+ or not. Catrina Cantina is a kind of a melting pot I think. And it’s very Mexican and local while also being very tourist-y, which is awesome,” Steiner said.
Since living in Mexico, his standup hour (which is in English) has become equally about coming out, identity, sex, and dating and being “a fish out of water” in Mexico.
“I think my humor is a little surprising. It’s very New York style. It comes at you big and fast at times,” Keenan said.
“More than anything I like jokes that make you think. Even if the joke is about sex or if it’s a raunchy joke, the joke may take a turn people don’t expect. Going into the show, some people might have checked me out on Instagram, so they know the vibe, but others go in with no idea. My favorite reaction is seeing happy people being like ‘Oh! Whoops. That was good,’” he reflected.
Keenan’s hour is also very much about the experience of living or visiting Puerto Vallarta and Mexico. “How could it not be? First of all I wanted to make something unique and I wanted to relate to people. One of the easiest way to relate to people is to talk about what we’re all experiencing at this moment. There’s also so much to joke about in Puerto Vallarta. It’s where an international parade of gays craving to live the time of their lives mix with Mexico and tourist culture. If you go to the show, and even if you’ve spent a day or less in La Zona Romantica, you will immediately be able to laugh at the things I’m joking about. It’s all right there on a platter,” he said.
Opening for Keenan, will be comedian Mosves Shakarian (Chelsea on Netflix), who’s been called ‘The Gay Armenian Lawyer.’
