When most people think of Puerto Vallarta, they picture beautiful beaches, whale watching, sunset cruises, and incredible food. But tucked away on both the north and south sides of the bay are two hidden gems that many visitors – and even some locals – have never experienced.
Did you know Puerto Vallarta is home to not one, but two butterfly pavilions?
And right now, during the lush green season when the jungle is alive with color and activity, it may be one of the best times of year to visit.

What makes these attractions so special is that while they both focus on butterflies, conservation, and environmental education, they are completely different experiences. In fact, if you love nature, wildlife, gardening, photography, or simply learning something new, I highly recommend visiting both.
The first stop is Mariposario Jardín Mágico, located on the north side of Puerto Vallarta. This beautiful sanctuary is surrounded by lush gardens filled with native plants that attract butterflies and other pollinators. Visitors are guided through the fascinating life cycle of butterflies, from tiny eggs to caterpillars, chrysalises, and finally the breathtaking butterflies that fill the sanctuary.
One of the highlights is the butterfly release ceremony, where guests have the opportunity to release a newly emerged butterfly into the garden. The experience is educational, interactive, and surprisingly moving. The sanctuary was created with a strong conservation mission focused on protecting native butterfly species and educating the public about the importance of biodiversity.
On the south side of the Bay of Banderas, nestled in the lush jungle of Mismaloya, you’ll find Morpho Mariposario Puerto Vallarta. While smaller in size, Morpho offers a completely different atmosphere. Here, visitors are guided through the butterfly sanctuary by knowledgeable guides and biologists who explain not only the butterfly life cycle but also the unique species found in the region.
The experience often includes coffee and tequila tastings, and one of the biggest draws is its beautiful riverside setting. After exploring the sanctuary, guests can relax at the restaurant located along the river, enjoying the peaceful sounds of nature while surrounded by tropical vegetation. Many visitors describe it as one of the most relaxing hidden experiences in the Vallarta area.

What surprised me most was that the educational tours are not duplicates of one another. Each sanctuary presents different information, different ecosystems, and different perspectives on conservation. Rather than feeling repetitive, the two experiences complement one another beautifully.
One of the most fascinating things you’ll learn during your visit is that not all butterflies have the same diet. While many butterflies feed only on the sweet nectar of flowers, others prefer something a little more… fermented. Some species are known to drink from overripe or fermenting fruit, where natural sugars have begun to turn into alcohol. In other words, some butterflies like to catch a little buzz. So if you ever see a butterfly fluttering a bit erratically or looking like it’s had one too many, it very well might have!
Butterflies are often seen as symbols of transformation, hope, and renewal. Watching one emerge from its chrysalis is a powerful reminder that growth often happens quietly and behind the scenes before revealing itself to the world. Perhaps that’s one reason people of all ages are fascinated by them.
For families, these sanctuaries offer a fun and educational outing. For photographers, they provide endless opportunities to capture vibrant colors and delicate details. For gardeners, they offer inspiration for creating pollinator-friendly spaces. And for anyone seeking a break from crowded tourist attractions, they provide a chance to slow down and reconnect with nature.
Puerto Vallarta has no shortage of incredible experiences, but these butterfly pavilions remind us that some of the most memorable adventures are often found off the beaten path. Whether you’re a longtime resident, a seasonal visitor, or simply looking for something new to explore this weekend, both butterfly pavilions deserve a spot on your Vallarta bucket list.
After all, sometimes the smallest creatures leave the biggest impression.
