Mayor Shares Timeline for New Airport Terminal, Amado Nervo Bridge

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Puerto Vallarta is moving closer to a new chapter in its tourism and transportation growth as construction of the city’s long-awaited second airport terminal enters its final stages. According to Mayor Luis Munguía, the new Terminal 2 at Puerto Vallarta International Airport is expected to be completed and inaugurated by the end of 2026 or during the first months of 2027.

The expansion is designed to accommodate the region’s steadily increasing number of visitors while enhancing the airport’s ability to serve both domestic and international travelers. Once operational, the 119,000-square-meter terminal will increase the airport’s annual passenger capacity to more than eight million, helping meet growing demand for one of Mexico’s most popular coastal destinations.

Construction officially began on August 29, 2022, and the 119,000-square-meter terminal is being developed with a strong emphasis on sustainability and modern design. Built to serve both domestic and international flights, Terminal 2 is designed to meet LEED Gold certification standards through features such as rainwater harvesting systems, solar panels, and high-efficiency glass facades that reduce heat transfer and improve energy efficiency.

In addition to expanding capacity, the new terminal will improve the passenger experience through a significant increase in boarding facilities. It will feature 19 passenger boarding bridges, up from the airport’s current 11, along with 16 remote boarding gates, nearly doubling the existing total of nine.

The investment comes as Puerto Vallarta continues to experience strong growth in air travel. The airport welcomed nearly seven million passengers last year, underscoring the destination’s continued appeal to visitors from Mexico and abroad and reinforcing its role as one of the country’s leading beach destinations.

Mayor Munguía also shared an update on another major infrastructure project expected to benefit the region. He said President Claudia Sheinbaum may visit Puerto Vallarta later this year to inaugurate the Amado Nervo Vehicular Bridge, which is scheduled to open before the end of 2026.

The new bridge will improve road connectivity between the neighboring states of Jalisco and Nayarit, making travel more efficient for residents, commuters, and visitors while supporting continued regional growth.

According to Munguía, both the airport expansion and the Amado Nervo Vehicular Bridge represent transformative investments that will strengthen transportation infrastructure, support economic development, and further position Puerto Vallarta and the greater Banderas Bay region as one of Mexico’s premier tourism destinations.
