Mexican Avocado Output to Grow, Exports Boosted by US Demand

Jalisco, Mexico – Mexico’s avocado industry is on track for another strong year, with both production and exports expected to grow in 2025. Thanks to favorable weather, improved farming techniques, and high international demand, the country’s avocado production is forecast to reach 2.75 million tonnes – a 3 percent increase over 2024.

Exports are also set to rise, climbing 5 percent to 1.34 million tonnes. The United States remains Mexico’s largest customer, receiving 80% of avocado shipments, followed by Canada and Japan.

Domestic consumption is on the rise as well. In 2024, Mexicans consumed nearly 12 kilograms of avocados per person — a jump of almost 10 percent over the previous year — placing Mexico among the top ten avocado-consuming countries in the world.

Michoacán remains the heart of Mexico’s avocado industry, producing 68 percent of the country’s total output. Jalisco follows with 12 percent and the State of Mexico with 5 percent. While Michoacán experienced a slight 1 percent dip in production in 2024 due to weather and stricter regulations, Jalisco saw a 5 percent increase driven by growing export demand.

The area dedicated to avocado farming is expected to stay stable at 256,000 hectares, largely due to new land-use rules and a deforestation-free certification program in Michoacán. These measures help ensure sustainable growth while protecting Mexico’s natural resources.

Mexico’s avocado exports remain tariff-free under the USMCA trade agreement, as long as they meet origin requirements. The avocado industry continues to play a key role in the economies of both Mexico and the United States. In 2024 alone, Mexican avocado exports supported 78,000 direct jobs and 300,000 indirect jobs. In 2024, Mexican avocados contributed $7.5 billion to U.S. economic production, $4.2 billion to GDP, and $2.5 billion in labor income. Mexico’s earnings from avocado exports reached $6 billion.

The Association of Avocado Producers and Packers Exporters of Mexico (APEAM), in an April 7 statement, emphasized the importance of the USMCA agreement and pledged to maintain high standards for quality and safety.

Representing 35,000 producers and 92 export packaging companies, APEAM serves as the official voice of Mexico’s avocado industry, working to ensure that Mexican avocados continue to bring flavor and nutrition to tables around the world.
