Mexico Approves 12% Minimum Wage Increase for 2025

Mexico Approves 12% Minimum Wage Increase for 2025

Mexico City – Starting January 1, 2025, workers in Mexico will benefit from a 12% increase in the daily minimum wage. This unanimous decision, announced by the National Minimum Wage Commission, reflects a collaborative effort among government, labor, and business representatives to improve living standards nationwide.

The new daily minimum wage will rise to 278.80 pesos for most of the country and 419.88 pesos in the Northern Border Free Zone (ZLFN). Marath Baruch Bolaños López, head of the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare, highlighted this as part of Mexico’s broader strategy to restore the purchasing power of workers.

“With this increase, the minimum wage has now recovered by 135% and aligns with our goal of achieving a wage that supports 2.5 basic household baskets,” Bolaños López stated. The increase means workers can now afford staples such as 5.3 kilos of beans, 5.6 kilos of eggs, or 13.2 kilos of tortillas daily.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Labor, Conasami, and employer and labor groups for their commitment to this agreement. She emphasized her administration’s dedication to ensuring wages continue to rise sustainably, fulfilling her campaign promise of increasing purchasing power for Mexican families.

This marks the latest in a series of wage hikes that have significantly improved earnings since 2018. Over the past six years, the minimum wage has risen from 88 pesos per day to 248 pesos for most regions and 374 pesos in the northern border zone this year.

A recently approved reform ensures that future wage adjustments will always outpace inflation, further strengthening worker protections. This decision signals continued progress in improving quality of life for millions of Mexican workers.
