Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Mimi Bomba is beginning to appreciate some of the less obvious advantages of getting older. Sure, there may be a few signs of age creeping into daily life, including a new approach to organization that involves leaving things exactly where they fall. But perhaps the biggest change is simply caring less about appearances and other people’s opinions.
Have you ever dropped something on the floor and thought, “Well, I guess that lives there now.” I did that a few days ago with a pen. Then I was looking for a pen this morning and remembered where one was. I have decided that it is just my new filing system from now on. Not sure what that’s a sign of – age or laziness. Maybe both. Probably both. Yeah, both.
Speaking of age, on the bright side, there are things that used to matter to me, that no longer do. For example, making sure my makeup was perfect before venturing outside. That one is long gone. Now I don’t even worry that I might scare little children if they see my actual naked face.
My brother once told me, “Sister, when you don’t have on makeup, you look like you just got out of prison.” My sweet and kind sister-in-law was appalled that he said that, but I thought it was hysterically funny! And true.
Another “advantage” of getting older is really not caring about what other people think about me. I heard someone say, “It’s none of my business what you think, and it’s none of your business what I think.” That sounds right to me.
I think that’s the reason I am now able to go out in public without applying warpaint to make myself look like Baby Jane. ¡La vida buena!
