Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, México – The Puerto Vallarta City Council has approved a project to rehabilitate the municipal Animal Control Center and build a new Municipal Adoption Center and Shelter, marking a significant step toward improving animal welfare and public health in the city. By addressing structural limitations and overcrowding, the city is transitioning toward a more humane and organized model for managing companion animals.
The proposal, introduced by Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González and Councilwoman María Magdalena Urbina Martínez, addresses long-standing challenges at the existing site. Currently, the facilities face structural issues and overcrowding that limit the effectiveness of daily operations. By prioritizing these upgrades, the city aims to create a safer environment for animals while simultaneously addressing broader public health concerns.
Director of Animal Welfare, Citlalit Peña, noted that the project marks a shift toward a more humane and responsible model of care. The transformation will occur in distinct stages to ensure organization and efficiency. The initial phase focuses on the immediate repair and improvement of the Animal Control Center. Once the foundation for better care is established, subsequent phases will involve site preparation and the full construction of the modern adoption shelter.
To ensure the safety of the animals during this transition, the city has developed a plan for their temporary relocation while construction crews are on-site. A key feature of the final design is the functional separation between the control center and the adoption wing. This strategic layout is intended to minimize health risks and streamline the handling process, making the facility more inviting for families looking to welcome a new pet into their homes.
Through these improvements, Puerto Vallarta continues to promote a stronger culture of adoption across the municipality, giving residents more opportunities to provide loving homes for companion animals while supporting public health and responsible pet ownership.
