Puerto Vallarta Approves Land for Electric Bus Charging Station

Puerto Vallarta Approves Land for Electric Bus Charging Station

The Puerto Vallarta City Council has approved the temporary loan of municipal land to support the city’s growing electric transportation program, marking another step toward modernizing public transit in Puerto Vallarta.

During a recent council session, members authorized the loan of a 10,100-square-meter parcel of land for a period of 10 years. The site will be used to build the city’s first electric vehicle charging station and maneuvering yard, essential infrastructure for the new electromobility system.

The initiative was presented by Víctor Manuel Bernal, who explained that the request originated from the Jalisco Urban Electric Train System (SITEUR) as part of the Integrated Transportation System program designed to improve mobility through inclusive accessibility, new technologies, and clean energy.

According to Amílcar Arnoldo López Zepeda, the state agency has already acquired 20 electric vehicles and requires a dedicated facility for operations. The new site will serve as a maneuvering yard, storage area, and charging center for the electric bus fleet that will soon begin service along key city routes.

The project represents a significant investment by the state government. Plans include the construction of electrical substations, charging infrastructure, and administrative and operational offices. The total development is expected to cover approximately 15,000 square meters, located in a strategic area with access to major roadways and electrical services.

Municipal officials identified a suitable location near the Public Security Police Station on Highway 544. Although the larger property covers about 45,000 square meters, only 10,100 square meters will be loaned to the state agency. The land will remain municipal property, reflecting the city’s role in supporting transportation improvements and future growth.

Mayor Luis Munguía requested that the approval process be expedited due to the urgency of preparing infrastructure for the incoming electric buses. Council members agreed, authorizing the land loan to ensure the project moves forward on schedule.

Officials noted that Diego Monraz Villaseñor and Pablo Lemus recently confirmed that the first 17 electric buses are scheduled to arrive in May. Additional units are expected in June and July, bringing the total fleet to 39 buses.

The new electric buses, manufactured by Yutong, are designed to transport between 100 and 130 passengers. Available in both 18-meter and 12-meter models, the vehicles feature air conditioning, universal accessibility, and onboard video surveillance systems that provide real-time monitoring. With a range of approximately 200 to 300 kilometers per charge, the buses are expected to offer dependable service across key routes.

The electromobility system will operate primarily along Avenida Francisco Medina Ascencio, extending to major destinations such as the road to Ixtapa, Marina Vallarta, and the University Center of the Coast (CUCosta).

City leaders say the project will improve travel efficiency, reduce wait times, and strengthen public transportation service for residents, workers, students, and visitors. By investing in clean energy and modern infrastructure, Puerto Vallarta continues to build a transportation system designed to support long-term growth while reducing environmental impact.
