Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Puerto Vallarta will join communities around the world on June 5 in observing World Environment Day 2026, a global initiative that encourages environmental awareness and action. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the annual event is celebrated in more than 150 countries and serves as one of the largest public outreach campaigns focused on protecting the planet.
This year’s theme centers on climate change and the urgent need to respond to the warning signs being seen across the globe, including wildfires, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events. The campaign encourages individuals, organizations, and governments to take meaningful action toward climate solutions and environmental sustainability.
In Puerto Vallarta, the observance will begin with a national beach cleanup on Friday, June 5, at 6:30 am at Los Arcos del Malecón. The effort is being coordinated in partnership with Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and aims to remove waste from the coastline while promoting ecological awareness and the protection of local ecosystems.
The cleanup reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and community participation. By bringing residents, visitors, and local organizations together, the event seeks to highlight the importance of keeping coastal areas healthy and resilient in the face of environmental challenges.
Puerto Vallarta’s participation in World Environment Day follows another significant environmental milestone. On May 29, the city hosted the World Tree Cities forum, reinforcing its role in advancing urban forestry initiatives and climate resilience strategies.
During the meeting, the city was recognized as a Tree City of the World for the second consecutive year, an achievement that underscores its dedication to responsible urban tree management and long-term environmental planning. Municipal officials have noted that the distinction reflects a comprehensive approach to protecting natural resources while supporting sustainable growth and development.
As climate change continues to affect communities worldwide, events such as World Environment Day provide an opportunity for local action with global impact. Through environmental education, conservation efforts, and community involvement, Puerto Vallarta continues working toward a healthier and more sustainable future for residents and visitors alike.
