Safety Review Pauses Roof Construction at Boca de Tomatlán Pier

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – The Boca de Tomatlán pier remains a bustling hub for coastal travel this week, even as state officials pause a specific improvement project to ensure the continued safety of the thousands of passengers who use the facility daily.

On Wednesday, the Jalisco State Civil Protection and Fire Department suspended construction on a new shade structure being installed over the pier. While the pier itself remains fully operational and open to the public, the decision to halt the roofing work follows a proactive inspection by state authorities.

First Commander Oswaldo Nicolás Hernández Arvizu noted that the pause was necessary after inspectors identified small openings in the pier’s concrete slab. To protect the public, the civil protection department is requiring a full structural assessment before the installation of the roof can continue.

The pier, which serves as a vital link to the coastal communities of Cabo Corrientes, was officially opened in September 2024 as part of a major 872-million-peso maritime connectivity strategy. This new shade project, managed by the City Council through a private contractor, aims to improve the experience for travelers waiting under the intense coastal sun.

Mayor Luis Munguía expressed his commitment to the project’s success, noting that the City Council is working closely with the Jalisco Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works. Preliminary reviews suggest that the concerns are limited to the surface slabs rather than the dock’s foundation. The administration has outlined a clear three-phase plan to address the state’s safety requirements, repair the identified sections, and ensure the contractor follows all state engineering guidelines.

This collaborative effort highlights a shared priority between local and state officials: providing high-quality, modern infrastructure while maintaining the highest safety standards for the public. Once the structural evaluations are approved and the administrative details are finalized, work on the shade structure is expected to resume, eventually offering commuters and tourists a more comfortable wait for their maritime departures.
