Summer in Puerto Vallarta: Learn the Signs of Heat Illnesses

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The second half of August through October are the hottest months in Puerto Vallarta. As temperatures soar, it’s crucial to be aware of heat-related illnesses.

Heat illnesses occur when the body can’t cool itself effectively. Sweat normally cools the body, but strenuous activity in hot conditions can overwhelm this system. There are different types of heat illness, ranging from mild to severe. Heat cramps and heat exhaustion are common but less serious, while heat stroke can be life-threatening.

Early symptoms include heat edema (swelling of hands and feet), heat rash (itchy spots on the skin), and heat cramps (painful muscle contractions). If untreated, these can progress to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Heat Exhaustion is a warning that the body is overheating. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, and a fast pulse. To treat heat exhaustion, move to a cool place, loosen clothing, drink water, and apply cool cloths. With prompt treatment, recovery is usually complete.

Heat Stroke is the most severe heat illness and occurs when the body can no longer regulate its temperature. Symptoms include a lack of sweating, confusion, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Heat stroke requires immediate medical attention – call 911, move to a cool place, and lower the person’s temperature with cool cloths or a bath.

The risk of heat illness increases significantly when the heat index reaches 90°F or higher, and direct sunlight can raise this by another 15°F.

Preventive Measures include drinking plenty of cold fluids, taking cool showers, wearing light clothing, staying out of the sun during peak hours, and avoiding excessive exercise and alcohol.

In Puerto Vallarta’s summer heat, even brief exposure to the sun can lead to heat exhaustion. It’s best to stick to shaded areas when outdoors.
