Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The annual whale watching season in Banderas Bay began with a splash, as the humpback whales made an early appearance this year. Local experts attribute this to the ongoing La Niña climate pattern, which has led to cooler water temperatures, attracting these magnificent creatures.
Astrid Frisch Jordán, a representative from the Ecology and Conservation of Whales (ECOBAC) civil association, has been monitoring whale activity in the region for six years. She noted that this year’s early arrival and high numbers are unprecedented.
The growing interest in responsible whale watching is evident in the increased participation in annual training sessions for service providers. These courses, which are mandatory for obtaining a permit, aim to educate tour operators on best practices for observing whales without disturbing their natural behaviors.
“This way, tourists can be assured that they are experiencing whale watching in a sustainable and respectful manner,” said Frisch Jordán. Nearly 450 individuals, representing numerous tour operators, attended these training sessions this year.
Frisch Jordán emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations to protect these gentle giants. She highlighted the positive impact of increased permit applications, which help to curb illegal whale watching activities. By monitoring and regulating the industry, authorities can ensure that whales are not subjected to stress or harassment.
To further promote responsible whale watching, the ECOBAC volunteer team has launched the Yo Sí Cuido a las Ballenas campaign. This initiative encourages tourists to choose authorized tour operators and to avoid supporting businesses that engage in harmful practices.
By working together, conservationists, tourists, and industry professionals can help preserve the incredible whale watching experience in Banderas Bay for generations to come.
