Guadalajara, Mexico – The 2024 Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) has concluded, leaving an indelible mark on the literary world. This year’s event, which took place from November 30 to December 8, surpassed all previous records, attracting a record-breaking number of attendees, exhibitors, and media representatives.
A staggering 907,300 book lovers flocked to the FIL, exceeding the 2023 attendance figure by nearly 50,000. The FIL Niños program, dedicated to young readers, also saw unprecedented success, with 194,239 children participating.
“The FIL has outgrown its current space,” said Dr. Ricardo Villanueva Lomelí, General Rector of the University of Guadalajara. “We must think creatively and expand the fair’s reach. In the coming years, we aim to take the FIL to the streets, to the University Cultural Center, and to schools.”
Professor Trinidad Padilla López, President of the FIL, attributed the event’s success to the collective efforts of numerous individuals and the enthusiastic response from readers. “This recovery is a testament to the power of literature and the dedication of those who work to promote it,” she said.
The FIL 2024 also set new records in terms of participation. A total of 2,763 publishing houses from 64 countries showcased their latest offerings. The event attracted 18,100 book professionals and 162 literary agents, facilitating countless networking opportunities and business deals. Additionally, 632 book presentations were held, offering a diverse range of literary experiences. The media’s interest in the FIL was also significant.
Over 849 national and international media outlets and 2,714 press representatives covered the event, and the FIL’s social media following grew by 78,000 new followers.
“The International Book Fair is a lasting tribute to our beloved Raúl Padilla,” said Marisol Schulz Manaut, Director of the FIL. “We are honored to deliver such a successful fair in his memory.”
As the 2024 FIL concludes, the literary community eagerly anticipates the 2025 edition, which will honor Barcelona as the guest of honor.
