Mexico City – The federal Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) announced a significant surge in tourism arrivals during the first seven months of 2024. Hotel occupancy rates across the country reached impressive levels, driven by both domestic and international travelers.
A remarkable 48.9 million tourists visited Mexico between January and July, with domestic travelers accounting for 72.1% of the total. This represents a substantial increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, international tourism also saw a significant boost, with 13.7 million foreign visitors exploring the country’s diverse destinations.
Among the top-performing tourist centers were Playacar, Akumal, Cabo San Lucas, Nuevo Nayarit, Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta, all boasting exceptionally high hotel occupancy rates. These destinations consistently outperformed other regions throughout the period.
The overall hotel occupancy rate across the monitored centers reached a commendable 60.2%, showcasing the growing appeal of Mexico as a travel destination. Beach resorts experienced even higher occupancy levels, averaging 68.3%, while city destinations recorded a rate of 52.8%.
In terms of room availability, the country added 87,000 new hotel rooms between 2019 and 2023, bringing the total to 895,000. This expansion has solidified Mexico’s position as a leader in hotel infrastructure, offering a wide range of accommodations to meet the diverse needs of travelers.
This number is expected to surpass 900,000 by the end of 2024, reinforcing Mexico’s position as a global leader in hospitality.
