The Congress of the central State of Mexico, a neighbor of the capital and the most populous in the country, on Tuesday approved reforms to the law to allow same-sex marriage, in addition to recognizing equal cohabitation.
The approved opinion establishes reforms to various articles and additions to the Civil Code, on the requirements to marry and the definition of concubinage and the rights and obligations that arise from it.
On September 27, 2022, equal marriage in the State of Mexico was approved in legislative commissions of the State Congress. On October 11, the reforms were approved by 50 votes in favor, 16 against, and six abstentions.
“The LXI Legislature of the State of Mexico approves same-sex marriage. The reforms also recognize equal concubinage. Same-sex marriage is a public institution, through which two people freely decide to share a life,” the state’s legislative body said in a tweet, after lawmakers passed the bill.
With this resolution, the State of Mexico becomes the 29th of the country’s 32 states to reform the Civil Code that allows same-sex marriage, following Durango, which became the 28th Mexican state to allow same-sex marriage on September 19, 2022.
At the national level, only Guerrero, Tabasco and Tamaulipas have yet to change their Civil Codes and make them consistent with the rulings of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SJCN), which has repeatedly ruled on the constitutionality of the reform.
