Puerto Vallarta Honors Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The annual Guadalupe Pilgrimage, a beloved tradition in Puerto Vallarta, is currently underway, drawing thousands of devotees and spectators to the heart of the city. This year’s event, which began on November 30th and concludes on December 12, is particularly special, with a record-breaking 455 pilgrimages scheduled to grace the streets of Puerto Vallarta.

Each day, the city stirs to life with the sounds of prayer and celebration. The day begins with morning prayers at 6:00 am, followed by a dawn Eucharist, setting a tone of reverence. By evening, processions commence at 5:00 pm, traditionally starting from the corner of 31 de Octubre and Juárez streets. These dynamic pilgrimages showcase colorful floats, lively dancers, spirited music, and dazzling fireworks, as organizations, companies, and associations join in this joyful expression of faith and unity.

The festivities conclude on December 12, known as the Día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, which starts with the cherished Peregrinación de los Favorecidos (Pilgrimage of the Favored) at 11:00 am. Later, the Guadalupe torch arrives from the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, symbolizing unity and devotion. The day continues with a solemn mass at 8:00 pm and concludes with Las Mañanitas at midnight.

The celebration commemorates the Virgin’s miraculous appearance to Juan Diego in 1531, a story cherished across Mexico. Her image, famously imprinted on Juan Diego’s cloak, remains enshrined at the Basilica of Guadalupe, now the most visited Marian shrine in the world.

Declared an Intangible Heritage of the State of Jalisco, Puerto Vallarta’s Fiestas Guadalupanas offer a profound reflection of faith, unity, and the enduring spirit of this beloved destination. Juárez Street comes alive with vendors offering traditional snacks, desserts, and religious keepsakes, inviting both locals and visitors to immerse themselves in the festivities.

Beyond its religious significance, the Guadalupe Pilgrimage is a testament to Puerto Vallarta’s rich cultural heritage and strong sense of community. The event offers a unique opportunity to witness the city’s deep-rooted traditions and experience the warmth and hospitality of its people.
