Puerto Vallarta is embarking on a transformative journey in waste management with a significant concession awarded to Monterrey-based companies Red Ambiental Ciprés and Red Recolector. In a City Council session on Friday, a 15-year contract was approved for the collection, transfer, treatment, and disposal of urban solid waste.
The agreement, valued at 867 million pesos for the first three years, is expected to deliver improved services and notable cost savings for the municipality.
Under the new arrangement, the cost per ton of waste management will drop from 2,138 pesos to 2,064 pesos, saving the city 74 pesos per ton. This will result in immediate savings of over 120 million pesos in 2025 alone.
Additionally, the partnership will eliminate the need for the municipality to purchase more than 25 garbage trucks and heavy machinery or manage the associated expenses, such as maintenance, licensing, and insurance.
Beyond financial benefits, the concession is set to improve operational efficiency. The City Council has struggled with the costs of maintaining vehicles, replacing tires, and addressing wear and tear, particularly during the rainy season. These challenges often led to unforeseen expenses and hidden defects that strained resources.
Mayor Luis Munguía emphasized that this agreement will allow rural areas, such as Las Palmas and outlying communities, to remain under municipal waste collection services. He also highlighted the rigorous selection process that ensured the most qualified companies were chosen for the job.
The mayor urged residents to support the transition by adhering to designated collection schedules and actively participating in the new waste management strategies. A 20-business-day period has been set to finalize the contract details before operations officially commence.
With this forward-thinking partnership, Puerto Vallarta is taking a major step toward sustainable and efficient waste management, benefiting both the city and its residents.
