Puerto Vallarta Airport’s New Terminal Reaches 45% Completion

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – The Puerto Vallarta International Airport has reached 45% completion on its New Terminal Building (NET), a major expansion project that will increase its operational capacity by 130% to support the region’s growing tourism for the next two decades.

Cryshtian Amador Lizardi, director of the airport, announced the milestone during the Puerto Vallarta Meetings event, held May 14–17, which brought together tourism providers and event organizers interested in the destination.

“We’re essentially building an entirely new airport,” said Amador. “Only the current runway will remain. Everything else – from boarding areas to connection systems – is being redesigned for greater efficiency.”

Key infrastructure is already in place, including systems connecting the terminal to the runway and boarding areas. Once completed, the NET will enhance passenger flow and reduce travel times. The modern design by architectural firm LBR&A integrates advanced technology to support a rise in operations and provide a better travel experience.

The expansion is part of a broader investment of 6 billion pesos during the 2020–2024 period, with an additional 3.6 billion pesos allocated for the current five-year plan.

Passenger numbers continue to reflect strong demand. From January through April 2025, the airport welcomed 2.7 million travelers. While international traffic slightly declined – affected by global political and economic factors – domestic travel grew by 15%, leading to an overall 2% increase in total passenger volume.

Looking ahead to the busy summer season, Amador noted that July and August will be key months, with expectations for continued growth. “We’re working with airlines to reopen routes and explore new international destinations, including transatlantic options,” he said. Viva Aerobus is set to launch a new route to Morelia in June, following added frequencies to Monterrey in April.

Beyond construction, the airport is collaborating with industry stakeholders to strengthen Puerto Vallarta’s role as a top travel and meetings destination. Events like Puerto Vallarta Meetings showcase the region’s appeal for conventions, and airport authorities are confident this momentum will continue.

“The NET is more than an airport expansion – it’s a gateway to the future of economic development and competitiveness for Puerto Vallarta,” Amador concluded. The terminal is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
